ALA abstract (session #68184)

Just realized I hadn’t shared this with you, my 5 blog readers. Last I heard, this is supposed to go down Sunday, June 28th at 1pm.

See you there?

SESSION TITLE: Public Health and Public Libraries: Librarians as Health Literacy First Responders

DESCRIPTION: Preventable diseases like measles are spreading in the United States because parents are receiving misinformation about childhood vaccines. This panel begins a conversation about the role of public libraries in addressing issues of health information literacy. Public libraries are uniquely positioned to serve as health information resources for their communities. This panel provides an overview of the field of public health, highlights innovative health promotion initiatives at public libraries, and covers training and funding resources for health-related library outreach and programming.

SUBJECTS: Advocacy, Community Engagement, Ethics, Funding, Fundraising, Information Literacy, Partnerships, Social Change

TYPES OF LIBRARIES: Medical, Public

SPONSORING UNIT: CPCT

Thanks so much to the Conference Program Coordinating Team and the Association of Specialized & Cooperative Library Agencies for their support on this project, especially Carrie Banks, Walter Betts, and Chris Corrigan. And, of course, to my amazing and flexible co-presenters, Christian Minter and Lydia Collins, who, along with my Emerging Leaders team, put up with my last-minute shenanigans (seriously, I’d have everything done by now for both my ALA presentations if I didn’t have this pesky MLS coursework to finish*).

I’d be remiss if I didn’t also give a shout-out to my boss and system director for giving me the administrative leave and flexibility to pursue an aggressive independent research agenda. PGCMLS is a really fantastic system to work for – I’m always happy to share my experience with job-seekers so please let me know if you’d like to talk – I can always meet in DC or talk on the phone. In the next few weeks, I’ll be in Bel Air, Baltimore, Ocean City, Rome, Florence, and San Francisco – holler!

Shameless plug for my student organizations: I’m receiving funding to attend ALAAC from the Catholic University of America’s Graduate Student Association and our Association for Graduate Library and Information Science Students.  Both offer conference support to enrolled students.

* I thought for a whole 5 minutes that I’d be able to breathe between my courses ending on May 2nd and my final course, a 10-day trip to Italy (!) that begins just before Memorial Day – then I remembered that I had 2** conference presentations to do – there is truly no rest for the wicked

** absolutely nothing compared to Lydia, who if I understood correctly, is speaking a whopping 9 times – which makes me even more grateful for her contributions to my little project
